  Case Study 3

Durman Stearn was recently commissioned to undertake the foundations, foul water and surface water drainage in the  former landscaped parklands of Dullingham House, designed by Sir Humphrey Repton.

The two acre site, which is now known as The Old Arboretum, and is owned by Mr Iain Cruickshank, contained listed walls of historical note and specimen trees and woodlands, requiring careful excavation procedures to undertake the civil engineering works.

The Works
Durman Stearn undertook the setting out of the site using the latest robotic surveying instrumentation & AutoCAD software to accurately position the buildings.

“I am so pleased I instructed Durman Stearn to undertake the civil engineering works...I would highly recommend them for any self-build project.”

The 9,500ft² main house is of a traditionally poured   concrete construction with trench block sub-foundation walls to receive 150mm beam and block floor. The garage foundations were required to be engineered and designed with pad and beam foundations to avoid tree roots.

Durman Stearn worked closely with architects and engineers, adding their practical experience and knowledge to save over £20,000 in foundation, drainage design and drainage design costs.

Ahead of schedule
The project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule and to the delight of Mr Cruickshank, who commented, “I am so pleased I instructed Durman Stearn to undertake the civil  engineering works. They are a highly professional company and offer exceptional service, and I would highly  recommend them for any self-build project.”

RH Building Design, who were commissioned to inspect the works, commented that the drainage engineers had designed and installed some of the best quality work they had seen in a long time.
